Abstract

In hybrid energy storage system, the major challenge is the system control and battery lifetime during regenerative braking scheme specifically for real time applications. This is managed by a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with proper control strategy. In this paper battery and ultra-capacitor (UC) based hybrid energy storage system is proposed with artificial intelligence based control strategy. The mathematical modeling of the newly developed model of the proposed system is derived in this work. A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to regulate the state of charge (SOC) property of battery and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based control strategy is employed for DC bus stabilization. To validate the proposed work, the adaptive control strategy is compared in terms of SOC value of battery and ultra-capacitor with the existing method. Furthermore, the performance of the established model and its control strategy is verified under various driving cycles by means of demand power. Simulation and the experimental results shows that the proposed hybrid energy storage system has satisfy the control constraints as well as provide better performance in terms of SOC, battery efficiency and bus voltage by controlled charging of batteries.
