Abstract

Relations between the military and society can be traced to the establishment of nation states where the nation and its citizens were accorded the protection by military institutions. Records of this type of relations can be found in the writings of Sun Tzu and Clauswitz. Both scholars opined that the military organisation acts as the „servants of the state‟. The military organisation is also seen as mandatory in ensuring the safety and security of the people, sovereignty of the nation and the survival of the states. Based on the above mentioned fundamentals, this study is conducted to gauge the perception of the people on the Malaysian Armed Forces and the level of national security. This study is aimed at measuring the level of acceptance or satisfaction amongst the people, being one of the stakeholders in the Malaysian Armed Forces client charter, to examine peoples‟ perception on the Malaysian Armed Forces with regards to fulfilling both the obligations in the clients‟ charter and the Malaysian Armed Forces objectives and also to gauge the peoples‟ perception on security threat and the Malaysian Armed Forces capability in overcoming them. This study employs quantitative data collection of 1,010 respondents comprising Malaysian citizens of 21 years old and above, who were randomly selected based on location, gender, ethnicity and age group distribution. Findings showed that Malaysians are aware of the role of the Malaysian Armed Forces and acknowledged the significant role of the Malaysian Armed Forces as the formidable forces entrusted to protect the nation‟s sovereignity and maintaining peace and stability.
