Parenting Style and Emotional Intelligence towards Delinquents

Abstract

This research is conducted to study the relationship between parenting style and emotional intelligence towards delinquents. 338 secondary school students aged 13, 14 and 16 in Kuala Terengganu district were involved in this research. This research were conducted using quantitative method where 3 sets of surveys which are Paulson’s perception of parenting scale survey, emotional intelligence survey and delinquent scale survey. The research data were analysed descriptively using the mean and percentage while the inferential analysis used correlation and regression. This research has found out that the most dominant parenting style is the permissive type, while the most dominant emotional intelligence self-awareness and the most dominant delinquency is physical delinquency. The research also has found out that there are no significant relationship between parenting style and emotional intelligence towards delinquents. However, multiple correlation shows that parenting style contributes a significant percentage towards delinquency by 4 percent. Therefore, this research has concluded that parenting style and emotional intelligence does not really affect delinquency. However, these aspects should be strengthened in order to reduce delinquency among school students but, further research should be conducted to justify the research data by looking at different aspects that were not measured in this research.
