Factors Influencing International Students Performances

Abstract

Objective: Nowadays, studying abroad has become the trend of within the educational sectors because it has some kind of “transformative power” to make students to become a greater individual. Not only they will become rich with knowledge, but they also will be rich in experience which will increase their competitive advantage when student searching for a job after they graduate (Dwyer & Peters, 2004). In the 2014-2015 academic years, the revenue from international education increased almost doubled and contributed $30.5 billion to the United States economy (NASFA, 2015). Aside from that the massive movement within the international education sectors keeps increasing around the world (Levent, 2016). However, although studying abroad provides benefits for the student, student failure is still common among international student due to some condition that they come across. Therefore, the purpose of explore the factors that influence international students’ performance. Method: To specify, this research develops a hypothesis which will test the influence of Student Motivation, Student Participation, and Student Socioeconomic Status towards Student Performance. This research uses a quantitative method. Data is collected from a hundred international student respondents taking study abroad program at universities in Europe and Asia countries. Data is analysed using multiple regression analysis with SPSS software. Findings: The study found that Student Motivation, Student Participation, and Student Socioeconomic Status each has significant influence on Student Performance. The R square revealed that students performance can be explained by 79% of student motivation, participation and socioeconomic factors. The rest 21% is explained by others factor that is not covered by this study. The study also proves that student’s participation is having the strongest effect to student performance among other variable. This research contribute to provide insight for higher institution to design and develop programs which increase the students participation, motivation as well as to put more attention on students social and economic status and condition.
