The Role of Internal Auditors to Prevent and Detect Fraud in Malaysia’s Listed Companies

Abstract

An unstable economy is common with fraudulent activity. It has been the job of internal auditors to prevent and detect fraud. Thus, this research aimed to briefly describe the role of the internal audit in detecting the possibility of frauds and also highlighting its importance in preventing the possibility of frauds in Malaysia’s listed companies. Moreover, the analysis intended to point out the advantages that an internal audit can offer to the management of Malaysia’s listed companies, and to the society as well as to those who need this area of information.In this study, 180 companies listed in Malaysia are randomly selected as the sample of study. Questionnaires are then distributed to the internal auditors and executive management of these selected companies. Results from the statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant relationship between the role of internal auditor in detecting and preventing fraud cases from taking place in companies/ firms
