A Study of the Socioeconomic Development Trends in Central Terengganu, Malaysia: Potentials of Marine Spatial Planning

Abstract

This study highlights the potential for adoption and implementation of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and its impact on socioeconomic development trend in Central Terengganu, including Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Marang. These three districts are territorial water of Central Terengganu is demarcated by the protected boundaries of the marine parks, namely Redang, Lang Tengah and Kapas Islands. It is the major ecotourism destinations in Central Terengganu but the development that have been carried out on the islands and areas surroundings their gateways in the mainland, to some extent are not integrated and sustainable. This study designed using qualitative approach and Geographical Information System (GIS). Focus group discussion (FGD) involved the government agencies, private sectors, local communities, tourism operators and non-governmental organisation. In addition, the GIS used to produce the maps. In sum, this paper recommends and concludes that MSP is the best options for the Terengganu State Government to improve the management of coastal and marine resources for environmental sustainability and socioeconomic planning in Central Terengganu
