The article deals with the transformation of the visual image of the Russian family in mass media. The specific visual images of the Russian family in different mass media are described –in advertisements, television programs, series and newspapers. In the past 100 years, the Russian family has undergone significant changes related to frequent turmoil that determined numerous modern problems in the development of this social institution. The transformation of the family image can serve as an example of the shift in gender consciousness. The distinctive features of the visual image of the family in Soviet and modern Russian mass media have been identified. It has been concluded that the visual image of the family varies significantly depending on the media outlet, functions and objectives set by the creators of such content.
