Abstract

The aim of this present study is to develop an aluminium hybrid composite with nitride reinforcements through economical route. In order to develop a self lubricating high performance metal matrix composite, silicon nitride and boron nitride are chosen as reinforcement medium in Aluminum 6061 matrix. The methodology selected for developing the MMC is stir casting and the weight percentage of silicon nitride is varied from 0 to 16% at an equal interval of 4% while the soft boron nitride weight fraction is fixed as 2. The developed MMC is analyzed for its physical and mechanical properties such as density, hardness and tensile strength. The addition of dual nitride reinforcements yields better results i.e. properties of the aluminium is enhanced as a result of reinforcement addition. Wear rate during pin on disc test also found decreased with every addition of reinforcements.
