Abstract

AZ91D is the most generally utilized magnesium die cast alloy and has an exceptional combination of mechanical properties, resistance to corrosion, and cast ability.Magnesium metal matrix composites with cockle shell ash reinforcement were prepared in weight fractions of 2and 4 percentages. Stir casting route is adopted for the composite fabrication. The size of the reinforcement was chosen as 53 microns. The measured and theoretical densities were calculated and checked with rule of mixtures. The Vickers micro hardness test is conducted for alloy and composites and found increment in hardness for composites when compared with base. The corrosion test was conducted on alloy and composites, the composites gives lower corrosion rate compared to alloy. The scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrum results shown the unvarying distribution of the cockle shell ash powder in the base matrix AZ91D. The mechanical properties like ultimate tensile strength, compression strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation were enhanced with composites when compared with base alloy.
