The article is devoted to the analysis of factors that influence the choice of a university when entering a bachelor or a specialist study program, based on a survey of students from four Moscow universities that differ from each other in terms of admission standards. There are universities with traditionally high admission standards both for state-financed and fee-paying programs, universities with average admission standards, universities with low admission standards, as well as universities with a big difference between the admission standards for state-financed and fee-paying programs. Based on the results of the study, the authors have identified the main reasons that influence the choice of a university and differences in factors between students of different universities. Based on the study, the authors have analyzed the preparation for passing the Unified State Exam, the choice of a university, and the fields of preparation with a distribution between universities. The results of the study have almost completely confirmed the originally formulated hypothesis and allowed concluding the differences between students of different universities. The results of the study will be useful to teachers, researchers, and university staff in developing a strategy for promoting educational services, as well as applicants and their parents in choosing the field of training and university for higher education.
