Dr. Gurdeep Kaur
Abstract

Public Distribution System was launched to eradicate the issues of poverty and food security within the developing countries and to work in the interest of the needy consumers for whom making direct purchase from the open market was a challenging task. The working of different agencies and government expenditures involves in PDS, can only be effective if the program is targeted to deserving beneficiaries and the public is satisfied. Customer‟s satisfaction with food delivery mechanism of PDS depends on Fair Price Shops‟ capacity to reach the poor and potential to serve them with good quality of entitled food commodities at affordable prices on regular basis. The basic goal of started Public Distribution System will be invalidated, if there was no optimum use of food grains by the deserving BPL families offered at fair price shops due to bad quality and non-availability of food grains and issue of food insecurity will remain unsolved. Thus, this research is an attempt to evaluate the satisfaction level of PDS customers in Punjab by using five points rating scale as highly satisfied, satisfied, average, dissatisfied and highly dissatisfied. Multistage cluster sampling technique was used to select the 910 respondents from the three selected districts of Sangrur, Mansa and Mohali from Punjab for the study. Chi-Square Test was applied to confirm that selected determinants namely age, occupation, education level, family income, category and types of ration cards made any impact on the satisfaction level of the consumers.
