Abstract

The creative industry (CI) becomes a new strategic sector in boosting the nation's economy. Vocational high schools (VHS) have great potential to prepare their graduates to work or entrepreneurship in the creative industries. This research is aimed to capture the interest and reason of the students in choosing the field of enterprise in the sectors of creative industries that grow in Indonesia through 18 types of architecture, animation, music, photography, design, craft, culinary, research and development, fashion, cinema, advertising, interactive games, visual arts, performing arts, information technology, television and radio. The method of research used is an exploratory survey with the number of samples of 350 students distributed on 7 VHS in Indonesia with a background in the core business of technology and engineering. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews, while data analysis used descriptive statistics. The results showed that the tendency of the most preferred sub-sectors of engineering students is photography, music, culinary, and design, while the less desirable is fashion. Dominantly, the reason they chose these sub-sectors was due to their hobby, the curiosity of the ingredients, and the high expectations of the entrepreneur in CI.
