Estimation of Ship’s Collision Potentials using AIS Data

Abstract

In the event of a ship’s collision accident, it can cause significant human and property damage and water pollution, so it is important to identify and prevent it in advance.In order to recognize the risk of collision, fuzzy theory was used to quantify the collision risk. The collision risk was estimated using RVR, a Bayesian-based nonparametric regression technique, to predict the collision risk.we estimated the collision risk for the traffic lane of Busan port using ship’s AIS data. The explanatory power of the independent variable for the response variable showed high with more training data, and the estimation accuracy was high for the small training data. Based on the results of this experiment, it is useful to develop a risk avoidance strategy. Accuracy and overall quality will improve if more information is obtained from other sources in the future.
