Abstract

Smart cities are emerging fast and they introduce new initiatives and services that implicitly impact the quality of human life in urban areas. In Malaysia, the policy makers have started implementing various initiatives to meet the goals of smart cities. Although efforts are still at its infancy stage, the Malaysian experts are upgrading smart city applications to develop top-notch services to place Malaysia at the forefront of the global digital economy. In line with this, this research proposes the e-Cemetery portal as a new initiative to increase the efficacy of the existing Cemetery Management Systems and to meet the rising demands of the urban society. This e- Cemetery portal digitized the cemetery culture in Malaysia by using the Rapid Application Design (RAD) approach to develop the system. The portal was further tested and validated to determine the efficacy of the design as a service platform for transforming into a Smart City. The scope of the present study is restricted to the diversified Malaysian society only as the respondents are from the urban society in Malaysia. The findings indicated that the e-Cemetery portal is an effective initiative for cities to become smarter by aligning with the urban development goals using the enhanced web service.
