Citizenship education is not just a matter of learning the basic facts about institutions and procedures of political life, but also understanding about politics, the law and the economy, and the civic skills to engage effectively and responsibly in public and democratic life. To meet these requirements, various pedagogical approaches including service-learning, community service and volunteerism have been designed. Service-learning in Civics and Citizenship Education (CCE) requires the students to involve themselves in the community, either within the school community or the neighborhood community. This paper attempts to discuss the use of service learning as a learning tool to promote a participative citizen in multi-ethnic Malaysia.
