Corporate Governance and Business Sustainability: A Review of Literature

Abstract

From the past few years corporate governance has gaining attention and momentum all around the world due to its significant role in global financial market and world famous many shocking scam and scandals i.e. Enron, WorldCom, Satyam, Kingfishers etc. and many more. Hence with the rapid development in this, there is a rigorous need for in-depth research in all the areas concerning corporate governance and its relationship with sustainability. This paper seeks to provide the systematic & comprehensive review of corporate governance and business sustainability literature. Although broad areas of research were also there, here all three specific pillars of business sustainability covered. These were summarized in the study as corporate governance leads to business sustainability; the relation between corporate governance and economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability.Each of these aspect were explored in detail, with the overall conclusion that, still efforts to implementation of sustainability is at the initial stages and corporate governance has significant impact on each pillar of business sustainability. Also, more research required in terms of determining the actual role of corporate governance and its importance in determining business sustainability in Indian corporate sector.
