Kolkata’s transport system is characterized by a variety of transport modes. The virtues of motorized transport modes have sustained the city’s progress but with negative impacts like traffic congestion, energy guzzling, pollution and health impacts. The vision put forth by Sustainable Development Goals 2030 recognizes the importance of public transport and ‘green transport’ modes. Success of public transport modes depends on access to their terminals. Thus the city has been witnessing development of para transit modes. But the stress has been on developing motorized para transit modes while the non-motorized ones like the rickshaws have escaped the attention of the authorities and policy makers and continue to exist as the “forgotten element” on an adhoc basis. To draw effective policies and formulate inclusive sustainable transport development strategies, it is imperative to understand the significance of rickshaws in passenger transportation and their challenges in the city. This study highlights the functional importance of rickshaws and their challenges in the existing transport system of the city and the user’s perception of rickshaws as a mode of transport. This will help significantly to position the rickshaws within the overall transportation framework of the city and enhance its effectiveness through integration with motorized transport modes in urban transport network.
