Consciousness of Marriage Act among Married Youth: A study in Southern Kerala

Abstract

Marriage is a personal relationship between a male and a female recognized by law. The Marriage Act controls the relationship among the married people. ‘Ignorantia juris non excusat’. It is presumed that every citizen is deemed to know the law of the land. So, every married person must have the knowledge about the rules and regulations of marriage. This research paper is based on a study of awareness of Marriage Act among married youth. The marriage can be incorporated as arranged marriage, negotiation marriage, love marriage and civil marriage. The main objective of this study is to understand the level of knowledge, relevance and awareness about the Marriage Act. In the concluding part, we have made some recommendations on how the Government can make the citizens aware about Marriage Act and how the citizens can maintain a peaceful and harmonious married life. In the present scenario, our judiciary is handling lot of divorce cases especially among the newly married couples. To reduce the problems in present scenario it should be made compulsory to have a basic knowledge about the Marriage Act.
