Abstract

The global electrical energy demands have been met to a greater extent by using well developed sustainable energy resources as Distributed Generating System (DG). The control and operational structure of a traditional power system has changed drastically since the evolution of microgrid. Microgrid, the integral cell of a modern power system, manages the naturally dispersed sustainable energy resources with intermittent power generation by successfully integrating them together. In this paper, a photo voltaic- solid oxide fuel cell (PV-SOFC) microgrid operating in islanded mode is considered and a PI controller tuned by Modified Genetic Algorithm (MGA) is proposed to make the microgrid immune to rapid disturbances in load and changes in mode. The performance of the proposed controller is then compared to that of the conventional PI controller. Frequency regulation, voltage regulation, system response and total harmonic distortion (THD) are the performance indices considered. Experimental results carried under MATLAB/Simulink environment shows that MGA-tuned PI controller performs much better than the conventional PI-controller.
