India is rated as the country with the most number of youth in the world. Though there is enough potential amongst the youth to develop the nation, there is one factor that hinders our nation from progressing technologically and economically. The lack of competency of students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and their attitude towards STEM is one main factor that prevents our nation from progressing. The adoption of Design Thinking to develop STEM among students right from middle school is one way to improve this. This study tried to bring out the effectiveness of design thinking technique through ATAL Tinkering Labs for developing STEM among high school students of Kerala and Karnataka. It is a survey cum experimental study. The sample for the survey study included 200 students of Karnataka and Kerala state. The experimental study consisted of 60 students from Kerala and Karnataka. The tools used were an attitude scale to measure STEM and an awareness test on STEM. A Design Thinking module was developed to enhance their performance in STEM. The statistical techniques used for the study are descriptive statistics, t test and paired t test. The findings of the study revealed that Design Thinking technique is effective in developing the awareness and attitude towards STEM among high school students of Kerala and Karnataka.
