The Use of Picture Series for Improving Writing Recount Texts for Indonesia Islamic Junior High Schools

Abstract

This is a classroom action research (CAR) which adopts Kember’ design to overcome the Islamic Junior High School students’ problem in recount texts writing. This is a one cycle which consisted five steps include preliminary research, plan, implementation, observation, and reflection. In the preliminary research, the researchers revealed that English learners of SMP Ma’arif Sidoarjo Islamic Junior High School, Indonesia, find difficulties in writing English recount text paragraphs especially in finding ideas. Regarding to these problems, the researchers used picture series as media in teaching recount text writing. The result found that picture series can improve their writing ability in recount text which improving the scores from its pre-test to post-test. In the pre-test, only 9% of the students passed the passing grade, while in post-test there were 83% of the learners passed grade. The criteria success criteria is 60% of the students achieved the score equal or greater than 73 of 100 as the minimum passing grade of the school. These scores met the criteria of success that is 60% of the students should get higher scores than 73. This study also showed that the learners has also improved their writing skills in most of the five writing elements include content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics.
