Psycholinguistic Research Methods of Cultural Concept on the Example of the Holiday Concept in the Chinese Linguistic Culture

Abstract

The study aim is to identify the concept verbalization originality by native speakers of the same culture of language or linguo-culture in different linguistic environments. The article examines the associative experiment specificity as one of the leading psycholinguistic methods for studying cultural concepts, notes the types of associative experiments like a free one, directed, chain, subjective definitions and a receptive experiment; the results of a free associative experiment to identify the core and periphery of the holiday concept in Chinese linguo-culture are presented. The mentioned research procedure has a number of advantages in forming conclusions regarding the linguistic consciousness of a person and ethnos and determining the national and cultural characteristics of the linguo-cultural image of the world. The experiment was carried out using the questionnaire method. The study participants were divided into two groups. The first included Chinese living in their homeland (i.e. 105 people), the second Chinese students living in Russia (i.e. 60 people). Based on the experimental data, the following components of the holiday concept in the Chinese linguistic culture were determined. The core is delicious food and gifts, the base layer is travel and names of specific holidays, the nearby one is rest, vacation and celebrations and the distant one is family and friendships, feelings caused by the holiday and shopping.
