Abstract

This paper aims to provide useful information on the development of magnesium-based metal matrix composites for improving its microstructure and mechanical properties by incorporating various reinforcements. Magnesium composites are new generation metal matrix composite materials widely used in automobile and aerospace applications owed to their low density, Excellent mechanical properties, high wear rate, and good corrosion resistance compared to other alloys and composites. Based on the combination and composition of the metal matrix, reinforcements exhibit useful performance composite materials. This paper presents the available literature for various combinations of reinforcement materials with magnesium-based metal matrix materials. Magnesium metal matrix composites with various reinforcements are gives increased Microstructural and mechanical properties. Accumulation of reinforcements like SiC, Al2O3, and B4C, metallic glass is improving the Microstructural as well as mechanical properties of magnesium-based metal matrix composite materials. Recyclable materials are also used as reinforcements such as rice husk ash, cockle shells, fly ash, and granite dust etc. for lowcost support, which gives better grain refinement and mechanical properties. When SiC reinforced in magnesium, it increases the grain refinement and mechanical properties. In contrast, graphite is added, which may decrease the tensile, hardness and wear rate of the magnesium-based composite materials.
