Abstract

The significance of building to man cannot be overemphasized, however, building collapse cause loss of lives and properties. It is a worldwide phenomenon that recurrently occurs on account of copious factors. Although building collapse in Nigeria has attracted the attention of researchers, stakeholders, and practitioners in the building industry over the years, the key factors causing the problem are fragmentally documented instigating lack of focus and direction to solve the problem. Consequently, this paper aims to evaluate the current efforts in the topic area to provide a holistic document on the principal factors constituting the problem to chart the pathway for intervention by stakeholders. Thirty-eight factors causing building and structural collapse were abstracted from literature and documented. Descriptive statistics analysis of the variables causing the problem based on the recurrences of the factors in literature established that the major factors causing building collapse in Nigeria include Faulty design and construction, Poor quality materials, Poor workmanship, Natural causes, and Lack of proper supervision among others. Hence, the implication for stakeholders is to develop a building compliance framework based on the outcome of this paper to mitigate incessant building collapse and prevent loss of lives and properties.
