Due to the harmful gases released by industries, thermal power plants, and vehicles, the global environment is fighting with high pollution and climate change issues. To reduce the impact of global warming, the electricity sector is moving towards green energy generation using solar, wind, small hydro, biomass etc. But these resources are intermittent which depend on seasonal conditions and therefore individual energy system produce the variable generation, further unable to feed the loads continuously. To address this problem, hybrid energy systems are emerging in recent years with AC grid, DC grid and storage options. In this paper, different possible combinational energy systems are presented which classified as AC coupled, DC coupled and hybrid coupled schemes. Moreover, the technical challenges involved in sizing, energy management, control and operation are discussed suitably.
