Micro Structural Analysis of Fly Ash Concrete and some typical observations

Abstract

The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is the most versatile instruments used for the examination and analysis of the micro structural characteristics of solid objects. In this study, the quantification of various phases present in the hardened pastes of fly ash concrete is presented. Three different fly ash concrete samples cured at 28 days are used. For each sample, 8 to 10 images are acquired using SEM. The volume fraction of porosity, calcium silicate hydrate, calcium hydroxide and anhydrate products are found for each image using Image software. The micro structural analysis leads to understanding of the complex nature of pozzolanic reaction and formation of hydration products. The results of presented dataset agree with the qualitative micro structural analysis.
