Research purposes – This research aims to elaborate school performance viewed from strategy and school performance management system. The subjects of the study were all Muhammadiyah schools which have unique management system from other schools in East Java province. Muhammadiyah has its board of education from elementary level to higher education level. Design / methodology / approach – Research design of this study uses a multi-method research approach combining qualitative and quantitative design using using a questionnaire as unit of analysis. The questionnaire is distributed to all 300 Muhammadiyah schools in East Java. The questionnaire indicator survey of strategic model contains 10 indicators and scale briquettes. It ranges from 1 to 5 scales. Fort the mediation variable was performance management system. It also uses a Likert’s scale using 10 indicators with a scale of 1 to 5 and 10 indicators of school performance with Likert’s scale of 1 to 5 as well. All those questionnaires were calculated using partial least square (PLS). Findings - The findings emphasized that the indicator of school management performance is influenced by external school environment such as students’ parent, it also influenced by the accreditation status, students’ achievement, and perception of stakeholders. The second findings illustrated that the shift of students’ religious values significantly contributed to the school performance values so that stakeholders are convinced with the quality of Muhammadiyah managed by board of education in the level of primary and secondary. With its management system performance would be more easily implemented by the school principal in implementing the strategy of vision, mission, and structured curriculum. Originality / value – Current research focus and findings relies on religion based management performance system such as schools under Muhammadiyah foundation emphasizes religion as a core value in the Muhammadiyah schools management system were more accepted by stakeholders if it is compare to non-religion based schools. Further, Muhammadiyah schools are more competitive than any other favorite public schools in common. The uniqueness of Muhammadiyah schools significantly contributed toward the school management performance system.
