India’s Innovation in Liberal Arts Education for Sustainability- A Conceptual Framework Using Interpretive Structural Modelling

Abstract

Purpose: Multi-models of quality in education emphasized on quality assurance in education. Researchers have proposed different models to review quality. To address this gap, this paper develops a theoretical framework on India’s Innovation in higher education for Sustainability and the factors identified are grounded in literature review. Design/methodology/approach: To the researchers, this study highlights the important variables which have been arrived at on the basis of systematic literature review. The factors were listed through literature review and then, a qualitative and interpretive tool, ISM (Interpretive Structural Modelling) was applied. This paper draws upon the author’s in depth understanding and analysis of the experiment made by a private university in pioneering the liberal arts model in the country. The study summarizes and highlights the need for multiple education models in a vast and diverse country like India with multiple student needs. Originality: Our study is unique and innovative as we have focused on exploring the different effects of the. The model suggested prioritizes critical thinking and responsible future leadership, required for sustainable future growth and not limiting itself to immediate employability. The framework proposed in this study can be utilized by policy makers and educationist to develop strategies which are focused, practical and effective for overall understanding of the innovative nature of higher education quality to bring out quality educational changes in India. Findings: Liberal arts education, Academic freedom and Political environment emerged as the most important factor, followed by employability, sustainability and innovations. An important fact that evolved is that almost all the factors have interdependence and were in coherence.
