Lessons of Social Work: A Case Study

Abstract

This is a case study on Kurian John Melamparambil’s Melam Foundation. Kurian John is a well-known philanthropist and Industrialist from Kerala, India. Melam Group of Companies is a Spices and Masalas business and is a well-known household brand of the people of Kerala, India. He is the Founder of Melam Group of Companies and the President of Melam Foundation. Kurian John founded Melam business to generate income for his charitable activities (Melam Foundation). Melam Foundation is an organisation run to provide free medical treatment for those who cannot afford it. Melam Foundation has helped over 1 lakh poor and needy patients through a strong network of over 1000 hospitals in and around Kerala. The government of India honoured Kurian John with the fourth highest civilian award – Padma Shri for his exemplary contribution in the field of Social Work. However, there were problems faced in screening genuine patients for providing free medical assistance. To Kurian John’s shock, he found retired army personnel, teachers with regular pension availing the facility in place of the real needy people of Kerala. This case helps analyse how some simple changes in the selection procedure helped in bringing about drastic reduction in errors.
