G. Monalisa and Dr.M. Nagalakshmi
Abstract

In this millennium, there are many transformations noted in the character / role of mother. Mother of this era is not the ancient mother who was sacrificing, fulfilling, catering endlessly to the needs of others. Today she has started flourishing as a bread winning individual, determining her choice and is self-reliant. This present paper studies how a foster mother wins over a genetic mother. A woman who cannot deliver a child or who is not genetic mother can always prove her love for a needy child. The character of Ishita is the victorious mother of my paper presentation. Our Indian culture and tradition give power to the goddess in cosmos but not to the ordinary woman living in earth. Manju Kapur has fought over both the sides of controversies from the side of Shagun (genetic mother) and Ishita (foster mother) Shagun‟s inspiration and aspirations to break the limits of married life to lead a life of her choice is pinpointed. Ishita‟s tender nature inspite of her infertility true, selfless love is also justified. Manju Kapur along with Anita Desai, Shashi Deshpande, Gita Hariharan, Nayantara Shegal has not only voiced for woman but also plight of father is being visioned. The protagonists in the novel custody namely Ishita and Shagun express their disapproval in many ways and thus they try to challenge the myth of motherhood.
